Trauma and Post-trauma Reconstruction

Dr. Zelle joined the clinical faculty at UTHSCSA in 2011. Born and raised in Germany, Dr. Zelle earned his medical degree from the George-August University of Gottingen School of Medicine. He received postgraduate surgical training at the Department of Trauma Surgery at Hannover Medical School. In 2002, Dr. Zelle moved to the United States and completed a postdoctoral orthopaedic research fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He subsequently, completed his orthopaedic residency training as well as his orthopaedic trauma fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Dr. Zelle’s clinical interests include the care of patients with multiple musculoskeletal injuries. He also has a particular interest in nonunion and malunion surgery as well late posttraumatic reconstructive procedures. His research focuses on clinical outcome research, meta-analyses, methodological aspects of orthopaedic outcome studies, and the translation of evidence into orthopaedic practice. Dr. Zelle has published more than 50 scientific articles in peer-reviewed orthopaedic journals. In addition, he has given numerous presentations at national and international scientific meetings, such as the Amercian Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Orthopaedic Trauma Association and the British Trauma Society. Moreover, he has contributed several book chapters to major orthopaedic textbooks. Dr. Zelle is also on the peer-reviewer panel for Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma, the Journal of Trauma, and other scientific journals.
