A second year medical student, Farhan Ahmad, represents UT Health San Antonio’s Department of Orthopedic Surgery at this years American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery’s annual meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada. His scientific presentation “Skin and Bones” was co-authored by another medical student – Kavina Patel, Sandra Osswald, MD from the Department of Dermatology and Marc DeHart, MD of the Department or Orthopaedics. The scientific exhibit was an exploratory review of clinical musculoskeletal and dermatologic literature seeking interesting diagnoses that both dermatologists and orthopaedic surgeons may encounter. Cases were divided into the pathologic categories of infectious, autoimmune, and genetic. Pictures of characteristic skin manifestations and accompanying radiologic findings were used to remind clinicians of these conditions. The authors created almost 20 minutes of video case demonstrations which were presented as unknowns to give viewers the opportunity to test their knowledge. After being provided an opportunity to make the diagnosis, a brief discussion followed to review the pathognomonic findings, pathogenesis, treatment, and other issues of orthopaedic relevance.
